Semi-Redesigned Kaiju 3 by CyRaptor
Semi-Redesigned Kaiju 3
Hey, remember almost eight years ago, when I posted "Semi-Redesigned Kaiju 2", I said I drew a Manda and Titanosaurus but had since lost them? Well, ten years after they were originally drawn, I found them hidden in a secret hatch in my college backpack while cleaning it out. Unfortunately, a piece of charcoal had also gotten loose in there and made a mess of everything. So while they're barely even decipherable (or remotely interesting), here's the last two kaiju I promised all those centuries ago, for completion's sake.

Hi there! Most of the offending posters are blocked at this point, but the comments section of Knockout's entry became so godawful that I feel like I need to stop such a travesty from occurring again! So here's a few of my most commonly asked and answered questions and comments. I love interacting with people and I definitely don't want to discourage comments, it just gets a little tiresome having to answer the same things over and over again, so I'm hoping this FAQ will save everyone some time!

1) What is Transformers Legacy? / Is this for a comic/fanfic?
Transformers Legacy is basically an "if I were in charge of Transformers". It consists mostly of redesigned preexisting characters, but there have been a few originals sprinkled in here and there. I typically take my favorite bits and pieces of previous incarnations of the Transformers brand and stitch them together into a horrifying Frankenstein's monster of continuity. Legacy consists solely of character art and biographies for the individuals I deem interesting enough to include in the project. There is a loose story driving the "plot" of Legacy, which is told piecemeal through the bios. Although I'd love to do so in a perfect world with infinite money and resources, I don't have any plans to make Legacy into a comic, fanfic series, or animated series. And no, I'm not going to submit my ideas to Hasbro because that's not how the world works, kids.

2) Why did you do _____? / Is _____ a reference to _____?
Please read the whole description of an entry before asking a question! I spend a lot of time writing both the character's bio and commentary, which combined should cover just about everything about the character from an in-universe perspective as well as my creative process in designing them and what's an homage to what. If you have a question about the character that's not covered in the description, ask away!

3) Will you be doing [insert character here]? / Can you do [insert character here] next?
At least through the end of Series 3, the characters for forthcoming entries are set in stone. Since I want to preserve some manner of surprise, I'm no longer going to be addressing questions about who I'll be doing in the future. If you do enough digging, you might be able to find mention of a few characters I've confirmed that have yet to appear, but I'd like the majority of Series 3 to stay secret. And I can't do everyone's favorite character, sadly.

4) When is the next entry coming out?
I truthfully will never have a straightforward answer to this unless I'm a day or two away from finishing it. I think people take for granted how much work goes into each character for Legacy from the design stage through to the final illustration. The absolute best I've been able to manage is about one entry per month, and it usually doesn't last long. I often don't have the free time to dedicate to the more intensive aspects of the design process, and I have other interests and projects that frequently take precedence over Legacy. Asking when the next entry is going to be finished isn't going to make it come any faster - if anything, it's actively discouraging.

5) Your tech specs are wrong.
That's not a question, but a statement I detest so much I already wrote a separate journal addressing it!

I'm trying to be more patient when addressing comments, but if I continue to see people repeatedly ignoring the text portions of my submissions or generally having a shitty, entitled attitude, I'm just going to block them. Also, I have a zero tolerance policy for spammers - if you only came here to advertise your crap or bombard my notes with pictures of Power Rangers zords (why would you do this?) you're getting banned on the spot. Otherwise just use good judgment and you'll be fine.

In his youth, shortly before the onset of the Great War, Sideswipe enjoyed a brief but lucrative career as the darling of the Cybertronian underground racing circuit. As the Decepticon insurgency began to swell, however, race attendance began to plummet and Sideswipe was soon left without a livelihood. His fame waning, he sought out racing leagues on colony worlds like Nos and Velocitron, but quickly found himself outpaced by its most dedicated competitors. With his reputation in serious jeopardy, Sideswipe saw no other option but to resort to cheating in order to win. He started small - spiking his rivals’ pre-race engex, tampering with the replacement parts in the pit - but his methods soon escalated to the deployment of mid-race electroscramblers and countermeasures, and ultimately blackmail and threats of direct violence. Eventually, Sideswipe crossed the wrong ‘bot - Knockout - but rather than exact revenge, the Decepticon recognized Sideswipe’s talent for subterfuge, and invited him to join the crew of interstellar grifters aboard the Darksyde.

Having only taken on the Decepticon sigil as a sign of solidarity among his shipmates, Sideswipe was quick to renounce his allegiance when faced with the prospect of being commanded by the tyrannical Megatron on Earth. Instead, he reluctantly fell in with the Autobots, out of necessity more than convenience or ideology. Now, Sideswipe finds his inflated ego and cavalier, lone-wolf attitude of little help on the fields of battle he avoided for so long, though his thirst for approval seems to be inspiring him to change his ways at least a little. Though met with distrust and trepidation by his new teammates, the Autobots nevertheless appreciate any extra help they can get. To that end, Sideswipe has been able to repurpose his tools of sabotage into those of war: his forearm  blades, once used to puncture opponents’ tires or pierce their chassis, now function equally well as melee weapons; and the yield of his shoulder-mounted laser-guided missile launcher has been increased to topple foes on a more permanent basis. Expectedly, he’s also an expert tamperer, with his speed allowing him to get behind enemy lines undetected in order to sabotage their machinery.

-------------------------------------------------
I believe I once described Sideswipe's points of inspiration as "labyrinthine", and I think that holds up pretty well. He references just about every character in Transformers history named Sideswipe and a couple that aren't. To wit:

His overall design is most obviously based on G1 Sideswipe, specifically the flat hood-chest. Like Prowl, I wanted to homage one of the extremely common "car hood as chest" transformation tropes directly and then get a little more creative with the rest of the design, hence the "angel wings" and very different leg schema. I originally wanted his forearms (and later his thighs) to be made from the folded-in-half seats, but I realized the limbs were going to be packed too tightly into the vehicle interior to leave any empty space for seats. Moving on, his head is also pretty much straight-up G1. And of course, he's an updated Lamborghini. The Sesto Elemento was an easy choice since it's already in the correct colors; for a long time early on I had planned on using the Reventon and more recently looked at the Aventador and Huracan as well, but I kept coming back to the SE as being the most visually striking. It's not much fun to draw, though!

The color scheme is based on his G2 appearance, which also got used for Animated Sideswipe. This is partly because I didn't want two red cars in a row, or two red cars on the Darksyde for that matter. It's also meant to be representative of his Decepticon colors, with the idea being after he fully integrated with the Autobots he'd swap the red and black to more closely resemble his G1 colors. I also just like the darker colors more.

Early on I was also planning on mapping most of the Beast Wars characters directly on to my Legacy characters, but that kind of fell by the wayside as the project evolved and the Legacy characters grew into their own individuals. So, early on, Sideswipe was meant to be the Dinobot analogue, the heel-face turner who was all noble and honorable. Well, Sideswipe is still a turncoat, but that's about all that's left of Dinobot in him. The only other notable thing is his turned-down, leonine nose, which was directly inspired by Dinobot's. He's now pretty much as dishonorable as you can get.

Speaking of turncoats, Legacy Sideswipe also draws inspiration from an Armada character - not Side Swipe, but Wheeljack, who was pretty obviously based on G1 Sideswipe in the looks department. Obviously the factions are reversed, but the scratched-out insignia is lifted directly from Wheeljack. I didn't put a tiny little Autobot logo underneath it though because I always thought that looked super dumb.

And of course a conversation about defectors wouldn't be complete without IDW Drift, who Sideswipe kinda-sorta draws from? His backstory was originally going to be extremely similar to Drift's, but I nixed that in favor of a different character later on. In truth Sideswipe's history draws more from IDW Blurr, and while I couldn't work it into his bio organically, Blurr is meant to have been Sideswipe's chief rival on the Velocitronian circuit. More on that later.

Lastly, his forearm blades are an homage to ROTF Sideswipe. I was going to give him wheel feet at some point too, but Jazz stole them.

Shin Gojira you mean? Well, the face doesn't work for me on any level. And while I don't particularly like the rest of the design either (as Godzilla), it seems to be appropriate for the reportedly darker and more cerebral tone of the movie. If they were saying "this is how Godzilla is going to look from now on", I'd probably be more disappointed, but as a one-off design for a specific story, it doesn't bother me that much.
