A true prankster at heart, Skywarp enjoys nothing more than sowing discord among Autobots and Decepticons alike. Fortunately, being sly and sneaky is quite conducive to his role as the Decepticons’ stealth infiltrator. In the hands of someone with more dedication than he, Skywarp’s teleportation abilities would be truly deadly, but he’s more interested in quietly materializing behind someone just to push them down a flight of stairs. As cocky and arrogant as his older “brother” Starscream, Skywarp is always smarmy and sarcastic, and in battle loves to make cheesy one-liners at every possible opportunity. Just about the only thing that makes him take is job seriously is a bruised ego.

Skywarp is outfitted with an experimental miniature Transwarp drive developed by Scavenger. Like the much larger versions installed on interstellar starships, the device is able to “teleport” its user instantaneously by warping space-time. Due to its size, however, Skywarp’s Transwarp drive only has a range of a few hundred meters, as opposed to the light-years-spanning range of larger ships. Skywarp is also armed with a pair of shoulder-deployed particle beams and back-mounted jump jets, which allows him to fly in both modes.

Alright! We're down to two weeks between updates again! Well, realistically probably just for this once. Also, Skywarp marks the halfway point of Series 1 or Transformers Legacy, and it only took (a little over) 6 months! Many many thanks to everyone who's watched, faved, commented, or just looked.

Probably the most controversial aspect of Skywarp here is that he's not the same model as Starscream. Having triplets with the same vehicle mode differentiated only by their colors just isn't interesting to me. Each of the seekers has a unique personality and function, so why not have that be reflected in their altmode. The choice of the F-117 shouldn't really be a surprise, with the black body and covert abilities matching Skywarp's established characteristics. Thundercracker's is a bit harder to guess, but I'll save that for when the time comes.

When I was laying out the initial groundwork of Legacy back in the summer of 2008, Skywarp was going to have a totally different head, which was "sharper" looking and decidedly less humanoid. I eventually decided to go with a much more traditional face to suggest a relation to Starscream - they don't look exactly the same, but there are enough common elements (the big chin and "earmuffs") to make them look like the "brothers" they are. Again, it'll be the same deal with Thundercracker.

Considering the, er, pointiness of the vehicle kibble, I incorporated a few more movie-style elements in Skywarp's design than in past characters, namely the claws, jump jets and skinny legs. I considered giving him digitigrade legs like many movie characters, but I wanted to save them for later Legacy entries. He does have a transformation joint mid-shin, though, so I guess he could still have them in theory.

Really simple transformation, a nice break from the nightmare of Red Alert. Very little kibble - the particle beams (an homage to the Armada Seekers' shoulder intakes) and jump jets are one piece per side and hang off the bottom in jet mode, but that's it. They can be removed, even.

As far as characterization goes, he's explicitly based on Beast Machines Jetstorm, though working elements of G1 Skywarp in was pretty easy since the characters are quite similar.

Revision Edits (1/20/14): Not much. Mostly just tweaked his colors a bit, making the black a little bit darker and less saturated, and the purple a little more on the blue end of the spectrum (inspired by that of his Armada counterpart). Even though I'm now really opposed to using the line tool (rather than freehanding) to make straight lines when inking (like I did in a lot of my earlier artwork) this is the one instance where I think it works alright, given the very geometric altmode. The mugshot also gets new art, even though I didn't think there was really anything wrong with the old one.

Next Up: Prowl! This is G1 Prowl, not Animated Prowl, by the way. But Ani-Prowl fans, don't give up hope, we ain't done yet.
